    6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You a Better Leader 

    Leaders are the same as everyone else–they make mistakes, stray from the path and compromise their effectiveness because of ego, pride, or insecurity.

    Having served as a leadership coach for more than three decades now, I’ve often seen great men and women not get the respect they deserve as a leader because they don’t understand the reality of their own leadership. Based on their experiences, I have collected some harsh truths that every leader must face before he or she can achieve greatness.

    1. A title doesn’t make you a leader.

    When you attain a leadership title, it simply gives you the opportunity to become a leader, so don’t mistake it for validation that you’ve already arrived. All a title does is buy you time–time to earn influence or to lose it, to get the job done or to fall short. Understand that titles are not the end but the beginning of leadership.

    2. Leaders don’t come with followers.

    As a leader, you don’t automatically have followers, only subordinates. It’s your behavior as a leader that determines whether or not those subordinates ever turn into followers. This is an especially harsh truth, but it’s also an important one.

    3. Leadership isn’t about position.

    For any leader to be effective, they must learn how to perform and get results. Leadership is not about your position but your performance–whatever your role. This small distinction is critical to your success as a leader.

    4. Competence isn’t enough.

    It’s foolish to think that competence alone can make you a great leader–or a leader at all. Competence is a requirement, but you also need to master a set of key leadership skills–vision, empowerment, and communication–to become a leader others admire and respect.

    5. Just because you inherited it, that doesn’t mean you earned it.

    Leadership is not genetic. If you inherit a title, it’s up to you to earn the position. That may mean working even harder than you’d have to otherwise. Set your privilege aside and focus on what you can do for your team.

    6. Authority doesn’t make you a leader.

    Many positions involve some degree of authority–police officer, judge, teacher, coach, parent. But even for people in those positions, leadership is not about authority or power. It is instead cultivated through character, competence, consistency, and compassion–traits that allow you to earn influence. And influence, not authority, is the foundation of successful leadership.

    The bottom line is this: In order to become the kind of leader you aspire to be, you need to first understand and learn to live with some harsh truths. Once you make them part of your reality, you’ll be on the path to becoming a better leader.

    12 Inconvenient Truths That Smart People Easily Forget 

    Maybe there really is such a thing as being too smart for your own good. Sometimes the smartest ones among us get lost in overthinking and overdoing and lose track of the basic truths that are helpful in leadership and life.

    For those who easily forget some inconvenient truths, here are 12 simple reminders.

    1. Never confuse education with intelligence.
    Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Frank Lloyd Wright were all college dropouts. You can have all the education in the world and do nothing with it–or you can teach yourself from scratch and, with passion and dedication, become massively successful. Use your intelligence to take you where you want to go, by whatever route is best for you.

    2. Pain can be positive.
    Pain is a necessary part of growth and learning; it can teach us many things about ourselves. Today’s pain leads to tomorrow’s strength, and every challenge you encounter carries with it the opportunity for growth.

    3. You’re the boss of your life.
    Even if you work for someone else, even if you’re at the bottom of the org chart, you are the CEO–and the CFO and COO–of your life. You are investing in yourself every day with your actions and the things you learn, and you are selling yourself every day with the face you show the world.

    4. Failure is a stepping stone for success.
    Many smart people are terrified of ever making a mistake, but never risking enough to fail is like slow poison. Failure teaches some of the most valuable lessons you’ll ever learn, and having the courage to continue leads you to wisdom.

    5. Low expectations are good protection.
    If you set the bar low, you will never be disappointed. Learn to let go and accept rather than expect. Life may just surprise us.

    6. Problems can start from within.
    We all run into a difficult person now and then. But when you routinely have problems with your partner, colleagues, clients, or spouse, you may need to ask yourself what the real problem is. Maybe we have to look within.

    7. High standards are worth keeping.
    There’s always somebody ready to tell you that cutting corners and fudging a little is the only way to get ahead. They’re wrong, and someday that wrong thinking will catch up with them. Earn the right to hold others to high standards by meeting them yourself.

    8. Potential counts for nothing until it’s realized.
    No one lacks potential, but many lack the will or the skill to convert it to achievement. The main reason people fail to reach their full potential? They’re unwilling to take a risk.

    9. Negativity poisons the soul.
    Negativity is like a tsunami: It takes over quickly and destroys everything in its path. When you learn to stay positive, you shut off the drama that is negativity’s lifeblood, and you open yourself up for amazing things to happen.

    10. Success is not the key to happiness.
    Instead of aiming to become successful, we should work to become a person of value–that is where the path to happiness lies.

    11. If you wait until you are ready, you will be waiting for the rest of your life.
    It’s always tempting to wait: for the right time, for the right project, for the right opportunity, for everything to be perfect. If you want to do anything, plan, prepare–and then take the leap.

    12. You owe something to the world, not the other way around.
    Instead of asking ourselves what we can acquire from the world, we should be asking what we can give. When you do, it changes your perspective. It changes everything.

    Be smart, but remember: Smart is good…but knowing the truth is best.

    10 New Truths Great Leaders Know That Most People Don’t 

    Like any other field, leadership goes through trends and changes–and if you want to be successful, you need to stay on top of them. Old-school leadership is just that, and what we do today is very different. To understand leadership, you need to be able to separate historic thought from current practice.

    Help your thinking evolve with these concepts from contemporary leadership:

    1. Authenticity and transparency rule. In the age of social media, there’s no getting away with dishonesty or cover-ups. If you or your company lies, cheats, or fudges numbers, the odds that you will be exposed are higher than ever.

    2. Your brand is your reputation. It used to be that when people talked about reputation they focused on your public character and your past. Today your personal brand is your reputation–and it’s what you say and do today that defines how people perceive you. Make sure your brand represents you well.

    3. If you’re not social you’re missing the boat. As a leader you need to be able to communicate and be visible, and in today’s world that means not just being present on social media, but being savvy and having something to say. Hiding behind a closed boardroom door is no longer an option.

    4. Collaboration is the new currency. If you’re not sharing, partnering, or collaborating, you’re failing to engage in the new currency of business. The price–and it’s a significant one–will be paid by your leadership and your organization.

    5. New choices abound. Around 35 percent of the current workforce is self-employed, and the numbers are just getting larger. People are switching careers in midlife and thinking entrepreneurially. There are still a few people who take a nine-to-five job in the field they majored in, but the age of knowing you have to please a boss to get ahead is over.

    6. Interconnection means freedom. It used to be that leadership controlled the conversation. Now, with email, the Internet, and social media close at hand for so many people, the leadership of power has been replaced by a leadership of connectedness.

    7. People want a say in their future. If you try to lead with hierarchy, you will be challenged–and it’s not likely you’ll fare well. Those who seek power and love bureaucracy will find it harder to survive as organizations become flatter, which puts more accountability in the hands of each employee and even clients.

    8. Community is critical. Organizations don’t exist in a vacuum, and there is no room for dictatorship in contemporary leadership. Cultivating a community requires the kind of leadership that encourages people to work for a shared vision and a shared goal.

    9. If you don’t lean in, you’re heading out. We’re listening more to those who have learned how to lean in, to take a more active role in leadership where they did not have a voice before. to be more assertive at work and not let biases keep them from pushing forward.

    10. Set yourself apart by sharing what you know. In an information age, the person who shares the most information is seen as the expert in their field. If you are to lead you need to set yourself apart, and sharing information is a proven way to increase your sphere of influence.

    You don’t need a title to lead. Everyone can be a leader. Your capacity is no longer set by your position or title. The ability to create influence is a significant form of leadership, and it is available to all.

    In another few years we may well have an entirely new picture of leadership. Meanwhile, the people who will lead in that era are coming up behind us. What we do now is how we change the world for the future.
